IBM e-business brand radio

These 30s radio spots were designed to run in conjunction with the Olympics, and highlighted IBM’s technology leadership of the games.

“Hurdler”, 30sec

SFX: Sports stadium. Hushed whispers of large crowd. Huffing and puffing of athletes taking their marks. One athlete clear above others.

MVO: He is an Olympic hurdler.

SFX: Crack of starter’s pistol. Roar of crowd, ragged pounding of feet.

MVO: After four seconds he leaps the first hurdle.

SFX: Pause as athletes leap, then – bububububoboom – hit the ground again. More pounding of feet and roars of crowd.

MVO: At twelve seconds he reaches another.

SFX: More pounding feet, another pause as the athletes leap, then – bububububububbububububoom – hit the ground. Landings now more spread out. One athlete still in foreground.

MVO: At twenty-three seconds he clears the last.

SFX: Another pause as athletes leap. Landing sounds – bububuubububububububbububbububuoom – now very spread out. Crowd bursts into loud applause and cheers.

MVO: And one second later, three billion people know it.

SFX: sound of three billion people cheering – ie a cheer that sounds like a lot more people than the previous cheers.

“Swimmer”, 30sec

SFX: Swimming pool stadium. Echoes of whispering crowd, slapping of thighs and bare feet on wet floor as athletes take positions. One swimmer clear above others.

FVO: She is an Olympic swimmer.

SFX: Crack of starter’s pistol. Echoing roars of crowd.

FVO: After one second she hits the water.

SFX: Splash of swimmers entering pool. Roars of crowd mixed with splashes of strokes.

FVO: At ten seconds she’s pulling strongly .

SFX: Splashes of swimmer’s strokes becoming more spread out. One swimmer in foreground.

FVO: At twenty seconds she’s in the lead.

SFX: Splashing of swimmers. Crowd bursts into much louder roars and applause.

FVO: And one second later, over a billion compatriots know it.

SFX: sound of a billion Chinese cheering – ie a cheer that sounds like a lot more people than the previous cheer.

“Vaulter”, 30sec

SFX: Sports stadium. Hushed whispers of crowd.

MVO: He is an Olympic polevaulter.

SFX: Gong of timer. Roars of crowd.

MVO: At one second he starts his run.

SFX: Thump-thump of athlete’s feet getting faster in foreground. Twang of flexing pole. Crowd cheers.

MVO: At nine seconds he plants his pole.

SFX: Scroitch of pole pressing into sand. Thumping feet stop. Crowd roars.

MVO: At eleven he sets a new world record.

SFX: Boing of pole unflexing. Smack of athlete landing on mat. Crowd bursts into roaring applause.

MVO: And one second later, his forty million countrymen know it.

SFX: Sound of forty million people cheering – ie a cheer that sounds like a lot more people than the previous cheer.
